December 7, 2020

The Walnut Springs Lady Hornets and Hornets have opened their 2020-2021 basketball season. There have been countless changes to the schedule and will probably be more to come. We have told our kids that we have to be flexible and hopefully the fans and supporters can also adjust to the fact that there have been, and will be, changes in the schedule throughout the season. We can only hope that the season will be allowed to continue.

The shorthanded Lady Hornets opened the season with a loss to Oglesby. They rebounded with a hard fought two point win over Bluff Dale. Erika Davalos led all scorers with her 14 points including 4 three pointers. Bekah Hubble added 8 points followed by Emmalee Pullin with 6.

The Hornets opened their season with the Bluff Dale boys pulling out a 46-39 win over the Hornets. The Hornets had an 8 point lead at halftime only to "cool off" in the second half and fall behind and were never able to catch up. Abraham Lares led the Hornets with 12 points followed closely by Corey Hargrove's 10. Jordan Ontiveros had 8 points, Diego Muniz added 4, Bryan Chavez scored 3 points, and Brenden Shuemake added 2.

The Hornets travelled to Mullin on Friday, December 4th for a hastily arranged game. The Lady Hornets fell to the Lady Bulldogs by a score of 32-20. Erika Davalos was the Lady Hornets leading scorer again with her 9 points including 2 more 3 pointers. Bekah Hubble added 5, and Cassidy Goens had 6 points for the ladies.

The boys came out on fire rolling up a 7-0 lead before going cold once again. The Bulldogs led 21-11 at half time after the Hornets could only muster 2 points in the second quarter. But that's why you play two halves.

The Hornets came roaring back in the second half outscoring the home team 26-17 and forcing an overtime where the Hornets once again outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 to pull out a 46-38 win.

Corey Hargrove led the Hornet scorers with 15 points, freshman Bryan Chavez added 11. Jordan Ontiveros had 9. Diego Muniz scored 4, Abraham Lares had 3, all free throws in the overtime period. Pablo Gonzalez and Jordan Vann both scored two points.

The Hornets and lady Hornets play host to the Gordon Longhorns on Tuesday, December 8 and will then play a district opponent, Arlington TLC on Friday, December 11.
